Jack Martingale
"I wanna be in the room where it happens, the room where it happens..."
--Lin-Manuel Miranda

  Overview

Mask: Jack's solidly built, and a little under 5' 9" with warm tan skin and short dark hair that's usually neatly coiffed. Depending on what work he's had to do that day he'll either be in tight and well-fitted dress clothes, almost always with some touch of a floral, or a faded t-shirt from some tour or other with the sleeves cut off and ragged cargo pants.

In his free time, the smaller and tighter the clothes the better, he's got a closet full of cropped and sheer tanks, and his shirts are almost always unbuttoned enough to show off his top surgery scars. Whenever it's warm enough, his intricate tattoo sleeve on his right arm is visible, a mix of soft florals and sharp geometric lines that runs from wrist to collarbone. He's got a handful of smaller tattoos as well, and is almost always seen with his dark wedding ring, though if he's doing any work he switches it out for a silicone band and wears the real ring on a chain around his neck.

He's adept at code-switching between stagehand, union president, Freehold negotiator, and queer twink at the club, though there's always a bit of overlap in what he chooses to wear.

Mien: Someone sketched his outline in charcoal, and didn't bother staying in the lines for the rest of him. Like a hand-drawn animation before it's cleaned up, if the artist kept changing his mind and didn't have a good eraser to get rid of the mistakes. He leaves dark smudges against the things he touches that fade quickly. Within the outlines of his form, faint contour and dotted lines appear, the ghost of an every changing map.

Mantle: The clean smell of an oncoming spring rainstorm, undercut by the metallic tang of blood rolls out ahead of him, and in close quarters there's the faint trill of early morning birdsong. He leaves charcoal-sketch flowers in his footsteps, that disappear after a few seconds.

Personality: He can turn on the charm when he wants, when he needs to negotiate or make connections or smooth a situation over. Give him a few drinks and he warms even more, and if you're lucky he might even spill an industry secret or two. Privately he's more withdrawn, and watches what he says. In any case, he's much more comfortable listening to other people talk about themselves than he is with the attention on him.

Public History:

  • Born June 4, 1994
  • Parents died in 2008: Got sent to live with his and his twin sibling Jane's Aunt Marshia and Uncle Joe
  • Graduated in high school in 2012, joined the Army
  • Back home by the end of 2013, and fell into theater work
  • Disappeared for a couple weeks in the autumn of 2017, and when he came back he threw himself into his work. Still up for a party, but he's always got work in the morning.
  • Joined the Spring Court in early 2018, waiting nearly the entire allotted time before choosing.

Rumors:

  • Led a strike at the Lux Obscura fashion show AND at Philadelphia Theater Company. In the same week.
  • He might be part of the reason Anna-Marie Cordray met her Final Death so soon after arriving in Philly.
  • Helped hold off aggression between History's Cradle Freehold in Baltimore and Patriarch Tree in Dover

  • Another Openin', Another Show - He's got his fingers in a lot of theater pies, and knows the scene here. Need work? Need to get the attention of some producer or other? Wanna join the union? Jack knows a guy. He's also the tech guy for the Stardust Jazz Club on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Music of the Night - Jack's a night owl, even when he's not working. Find him in the Gayborhood, at one of the many dance clubs. Or even just wandering the city at night. He's not looking for trouble, promise.
  • It's Better With a Union Man - He's the youngest and first openly trans person to hold the Union President position for the Local #8 stagehands union. Not afraid to show up to a strike in solidarity, or make a scene, or call you on your breach of contract. He's been on strike for multiple theater companies, but always prefers to settle contracts at the negotiating table.
  • I Have Confidence (They'll Put Me to the Test)- Now that Jack's an Emissary for the Spring Court, he's often the one tagged in for diplomatic missions. Right now, his status is merely for mundane unions, but who knows what's next? He's made nice with a lot of the local supernatural societies, as well as some of the surrounding Freeholds.
  • What's The Use Of Gettin' Sober - Maybe it's for the wrong reasons, but Jack's sober, now. You may have seen him at a meeting - or maybe you've seen him eyeing drinks at a bar. Spring Courtiers being all about desire, and all.

  Quotes

"This is an example quote. You can leave a quote here, showing how your character would speak of Jack behind his back." - Your Name Here

"If facebook hadn't made 'it's complicated' the sort of thing you say about friends with benefits or dating three people at the same time, that'd be how I'd describe what's going on. We're talking again, at least. He's given me some good advice. It just feels like I'm always the one opening myself up to him, lately, and that's not comfy." - Jane

"It's complicated. And also not at all." Teagan

Soundtrack
"I Know A Place", MUNA
And I can tell
When you get nervous
You think being yourself
Means being unworthy
And it's hard to love
With a heart that's hurting
But if you want to go out dancing

I know a place
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and watch what'll happen
